US-China Science & Technology Cooperation Forum,
co-organized by USCEA and Fujian Provincial Science
Commission, was held in West Lake Hotel, Fuzhou from September
11 through 13, 2001. Dr. George Wang, President of
USCEA, William Spitler, Director of New York Center
of US Department of Commerce, Herbert Austin, Director
of New York Center of US Federal Small Business Administration,
Barney Lehrer, President of US National Association
of Export Companies, Sophia Koch, Asia Director of
New Jersey State Commerce & Economic Growth
Commission,
David Shih, Director of China Center of Pennsylvania
State Department of Community & Economic Development
and other US Trade Mission members attended the forum.
As China's entry into WTO becomes imminent, both challenges
and opportunities will be presented to US and Chinese
companies in this quickly integrated global market.
How to meet the challenges and take the opportunities
generated by this historical event was the very theme
of the forum. It was also the first time that a forum
with
about 300 US and Chinese companies' participation
was ever in Fujian Province.
Hui Lin, Deputy Secretary General of Fujian Provincial Government, Wanjin Lin, Deputy Commissioner of Fujian Provincial Science Commission attended the conference. Shuangyu Ye, Commissioner of Fujian Provincial Science Commission delivered a keynote speech on cooperation between US and China in science and technology areas. Other keynote speakers of the forum included William Spitler, Director of New York Center of US Department of Commerce, David Shih, Director of China Center of Pennsylvania State Department of Community & Economic Development, Zhangtai Bao, Vice President of US-China Entrepreneur Exchange Advancement Association and General Manager of Mindong Autai Corporation, and Deliang Zhang, Permanent Director of USCEA and General Manager of Longhai Dexing Machinery Co, Ltd.
About 230 US companies' business interests, across
more than
20
industries, including electronics, telecommunications,
pharmaceutics, chemical products, machinery, electric
appliances, apparel, construction materials, packaging,
and other consumer goods, were also presented to the
Chinese business community in the afternoon's business
meeting session.
In the evening of September 12th, Fujian Provincial
Science Commission hosted a banquet for US Trade Mission
members and other attendees. At the banquet, Commissioner
Ye and Dr. George Wang gave their congratulations
for the great success of the
forum and expressed their best wishes for the future
cooperation between the companies in Fujian and US
in the years to come. Fuzhou High School Symphony
Orchestra performed an excellent concert for all banquet
attendees after the dinner.
In the morning of September 13th, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Lin, US Trade Mission visited Fuzhou Economic & Technological Development Zone (FETDZ). Jianhui Shi, Deputy Director of FETDZ introduced to the visitors the investment environment and preferable policies of the FETDZ, and led the delegation to have a factory tour in Zhonghua Tube Corp and Mawei Shipyard. The achievement of the FETDZ and its beautiful natural environment deeply impressed all the US visitors.
